The Wrangler Crew Is Taking the Reins

One of the exciting moments at our annual Rodeo is announcing this year’s Head Wranglers — one boy and one girl chosen to lead in Big Oak Cattle’s program. It’s a big responsibility that requires character and integrity to lead peers, care for and be trusted with the animals, and make decisions and follow through.

Leading by Example

As Head Wrangler, I want to set an example for the girls on my team. Mrs. Autumn, the Girls’ Ranch Cattle Team Lead, has helped me a lot. She has walked through everything with a smile, working diligently and always making time for me.

When I came to the Ranch, I was a shy, timid girl. I didn’t have a personal relationship with the Lord until five years ago, and that’s when everything changed for me. You can’t really figure out who you are and where your identity is unless you know Jesus. He’s what really changed me.

When they named me Head Wrangler at the Rodeo, it felt like a big weight was dropped on my shoulders — but a good weight. I feel the responsibility of carrying and leading my team. It holds me accountable, and honestly, there’s no other team I’d rather lead. I love being able to walk with them through this journey. That makes me really proud.

Suzanne, Makenzie’s housemom, said, “Makenzie has a quiet maturity and a discernment that has grown over the last few years from her growing relationship with Christ.”

Growing Through Responsibility

As Head Wrangler, I have stepped up as a leader. In addition to overseeing the crew, I also rope, feed, and care for the animals, drive the tractor, and take on other responsibilities.

I really enjoy being with the cattle crew. They make a sometimes menial job really fun. Mr. Drew and Mr. Nick are very patient and calm. They are the best bosses I’ve ever had. One time I was having trouble building a fence because I wasn’t really locked in. Mr. Drew didn’t get frustrated with me, but calmly explained it to me. That really stuck with me.

When Mr. Drew and Mr. Nick see areas where we can improve, they do everything they can to teach us and give us opportunities to succeed. I’m not exactly sure what I want to do when I get older, but I’m learning from these opportunities and waiting for God to lead me wherever He wants me to be.

“I feel like Nathan has grown in confidence since he has taken on more responsibility as Head Wrangler. I’m really proud of him,” says Amy, Nathan’s mom.
