At ASCEND, we provide a supportive environment to guide young adults as they transition to life beyond the Ranch. Taylor is one example of how ASCEND equips our ASCENDants with the tools they need to build their futures.
When I first came to ASCEND, I was kind of lonely. I wanted to find a church and connect with a group, but finding friendships took some time. I also knew I needed to find a job, but there were so many opportunities, and I didn’t know where to start.
Chris and Olivia, the ASCEND Directors, helped me navigate this transition. Mrs. Olivia was always there for me. I remember one really hard day when I called her. Even though it was 7 p.m. and she had two kids, she talked to me for three hours and comforted me.
Through the life skills classes at ASCEND, I learned practical things like how to dress for interviews, build my resume and manage my time and budget. My communication skills have also improved. Looking back, I can see how much I’ve grown.
I graduated from Jefferson State Community College in August with an associate degree in Baking and Pastry. I’ve applied what I learned in culinary school to my baking business. I also earned my STCW certification so I can work on a boat, and my PSVD certification in private detail security. I currently work at Greystone Country Club, but my dream is to work on a yacht so I can explore new places and use the skills I’ve learned.
I’m proud of how much I’ve grown at ASCEND — becoming more responsible, starting my own business and developing a strong work ethic. I’m grateful to ASCEND for helping me work toward my goals and preparing me for what comes next.
