With Veteran’s Day approaching, we sat down with Kaige, one of our boys who is pursuing a future in the military, to ask him some questions. What an honor it is to watch his Story of Hope unfold!
1. What made you want to pursue the Military?
The military has always been in the back of my mind ever since I was young. Last summer, I got a chance to experience it in person when I visited the United States Naval Academy (USNA). This is where I saw the brotherhood, camaraderie, and support every one showed. My interests have really spiked since then, and I realized this is the path I want to take.
2. Which branch do you want to pursue?
The branch I want to pursue is the Air Force, simply because it best provides the skills I want to take into a career field. It also has some of my biggest interests.
3. How would you say that life on the Ranch has prepared you for this calling?
With 11 years on the Ranch, there have been many great mentors and leaders placed in my life who have helped shape me into who I am today. My job with the cattle crew has focused and helped build my character, discipline, work ethic, and leadership. The Ranch has really strived to help me with my relationship with the Lord so I could have the faith to go out on my own.
4. Is there someone that is or has served actively that you know that has encouraged you through this path?
Yes there are a couple, but one person who really sticks out to me is Steven Barnes who I lived with for over 7 years, and is closer than a brother to me. He is currently serving in the Air Force in Anchorage, Alaska. He has helped guide me, as I have asked him plenty of questions of his opinion about the Air Force and his job.
5. How are you currently preparing for the military?
I am currently preparing for the military by really focusing on my physical strength, endurance, and cardio. I do weighted push ups, pull ups, and squats every day. I run at least 3 miles a week to keep up with cardio. I also have been going to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) for 3 years, 2 nights a week. I am also currently studying for the ASVAB, and I plan on taking it later this month.
6. What does serving our country mean to you?
To me, this country is a symbol of freedom and equal opportunity for everyone. This country is a place to go on adventure and take risks. It is also my home.
7. Why do you feel that it is important to serve our country?
It is important to me because many people have sacrificed a lot to protect our freedoms and beliefs. I feel I need to also protect that freedom against the rising hatred from other countries against America. I also want to provide and protect the ones I love and feel it is best done in the military.
8. How awesome was it to be able to carry the American Flag at the P21 Rodeo?
It was amazing – I haven’t done anything thing else like it. Being able to ride a horse and carry the American flag at the same time in front of a huge crowd was really thrilling. It was a moment I will never forget!
