We recently had the chance to sit down with Chelsea, one of our graduates, to ask her some questions about graduation, winning the RITA Award and her future plans. As we chatted, it was clear—this milestone means more than just finishing school; it’s a powerful reminder of how far she’s come.
How does it feel to be an official high school graduate?
- It feels amazing! There are so many words to describe the feelings of excitement, nervousness, and freedom. There’s a giant weight lifted off my shoulders because of school work, extracurricular activities, and now I have a little time to be able to just sit and chill. So all in all, it feels amazing.
What does winning the RITA Award mean to you?
- When they read off what the RITA Award meant and how important it was, I didn’t think she would say my name. When she said my name, I was stunned. I didn’t realize that I made a difference in people’s lives, but hearing my name called
ithelped me realize that I did make a difference, I made people feel seen, and I loved like Jesus. That meant the world to me.
What does RITA stand for, and do you feel like those words resonate with you?
- The RITA Award stands for someone Ready, Inspirational, Trustworthy, and Available. These words are all the things I aspire to be. I want to be ready for anything life throws at me — from a new sister to putting what I want aside to help someone else. I want to inspire others to step out of their comfort zone and chase big dreams. I have always wanted to be someone you know my words are true when they leave my lips. Finally, I want to always be available for anyone who needs me. Anytime of day or night and I want to help others feel seen.
How have your houseparents prepared you for this season of life?
- My housparents have gone above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to me. They have taught me how to budget, talk in front of people, hold myself to a higher standard, and so much more. They have prepared me for anything thrown my way and if there’s something that I’m not ready for, I know I can always call my mom or dad and ask them anything. I love them and am so grateful to the Lord for giving me them.
What are your next steps/plans?
- I am planning on attending the ASCEND program and staying with them for all four years of my time at Samford University. I want to study marine science to one day become a marine mammalogist.
What about ASCEND are you most excited about?
- I am most excited about the weekly meetings. I have been told these meetings help keep the ASCENDants together and assist in always learning new things from finances all the way to a relationship with God. I am also excited about the SHIP. I am excited to hang out there with friends drinking coffee and eating ice cream.
Any other comments or things you would like to add?
- Six years ago, I didn’t think I would make it. I didn’t think I would graduate high school and go to college, much less at Samford. Looking back, I am so proud of where I’ve been and where I’m headed. I wouldn’t have made it if it wasn’t for the Lord, the Ranch, and my family’s constant encouragement and support.
